Even as water levels are depleting in many reservoirs, Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) assures that there are sufficient reserves to ensure supplies till December 2019. This is despite poor inflows into the reservoirs.

With mercury levels rising, there are apprehensions among citizens over the availability of drinking water this summer. However, the HMWSSB informs that the situation is comfortable and available water in reservoir sources is adequate. The board is also fully geared up to meet all eventualities.

At present, the water board is drawing 470 mgd (million gallons per day) water from four sources, including Osman Sagar, Himayath Sagar, Nagarjunasagar and Yellampally Reservoirs.Of these, 20 mgd is being drawn from Osmansagar, 8 mgd from Himayathsagar, 270 mgd from Nagarjunasagar (River Krishna) and 172 mgd from Yellampally (River Godavari).“With the current rate of drawing from each source, the existing reserves are sufficient to ensure supply till December 2019. This is even without any inflows,” said a senior official from HMWSSB.

Regarding water supply through tankers, the water board has installed 13 more filling stations in addition to the existing 70 filling stations. A few filling stations are being operated round the clock to avoid any inconvenience to the customers. This apart, 90 water tankers are arranged to ensure supply to the needy areas for free or on payment basis, he said.To prevent any snags, the transmission wing of HMWSSB is constantly monitoring the head work pumps and motors operations, water treatment plants, master balancing reservoirs etc. Further, the flows are being regulated through SCADA water meters to distribute the supplies as per the allocations to each operation and maintenance division.

The same data is being shared with all the operation and maintenance field officers, who are verifying their respective reservoir levels for further distribution to the customers.“The current supplies will be continued all through the summer and citizens need not worry about water supply,” assured the official.
