Telangana can come out with a Defence incubator: KTR

Hyderabad: Hyderabad being a seismically safe location had been a preferred destination for defence establishments in the country. With adequate skilled manpower available in the city, both public and private industry has evolved backed by the research and academic institutions.Realising the strengths of the region in defence and aerospace segments, aerospace parks have come up boosting the growth further.To focus on disruption in the defence space, Telangana can come out with a Defence incubator repeating the success seen with the India’s largest startup incubator T-Hub, KT Rama Rao, Industries Minister, Telangana, said.

Focusing on military avionics, both the Defence laboratories and industry can work together taking along the MSMEs in this space. The existing aerospace parks which house facilities of leading players in the industry such as Tata Advanced Systems (having ties with companies such as Pratt & Whitney and Sikorsky) will act as a catalyst to create a robust ecosystem for this industry.State government is keen to support Ministry of Defence initiatives and help industry to benefit from the offset policy. Telanagna is keen on Defence, Aerospace and Defence Electronics. He said, though foreign direct investment (FDI) in Defence is welcome, the industry should gear up to develop products indigenously.

To harness research capabilities across verticals including Defence, the State government has also initiated Research and Innovation Circle (RICH) programme that aims encourage applied research and innovation in all the core industries of the State. With companies and defence institutions such as DRDO, Midhani and VEM Technologies besides others, defence sector is set to flourish in Hyderabad, said KTR, addressing a gathering of defence & aerospace industry representatives and India Air Force officials at the Indian Air Force-Industry Seminar held by the national industry body PHD Chamber in Hyderabad on Friday.KTR said the State has set benchmarks in terms of ease of doing business. With self-certification, it has become easy for industry to initiate projects or operations. Through TS-iPass, the State has given 4,000 clearances to companies investing Rs 70,000 crore creating two lakh jobs. The State is registering double growth compared to the national growth.

G Satheesh Reddy, scientific advisor, Ministry of Defence, said, Hyderabad historically had been a hub for Defence sector and more so for avionics and the number of MSMEs in this space has gone up over the years. Companies such as BDL are making 50 missiles a month.Hyderabad which will host India Aviation Show in March next year will further help bring all the stakeholders to one platform on collaborating to meet nation’s requirements.
